cleaning the barrel too much?

after firing my rifles, I clean the barrels with breakfree and/or hoppes on patches. Most of the time I go through 10-20 patches until a patch comes out dirt free! I don't want to leave the barrel dirty because I mostly fire old russian ammo, BUT by shoving the cleaning stick in there 10 times or more, could that do more damage then just leaving it dirty?

I have an idea. Here is a good method (although some might think it goes overboard):

1. Shoot Gun scrubber down barrel from chamber end to get rid of all the easy stuff
2. Moisten a patch of bore cleaner (Shooter's Choice MC-7, for example) and push it down barrel then let barrel sit for a few minutes
3. Dry-patch the barrel until patches are clean (if in doubt, repeat step .2 then .3 until satisfied)
4. Wet-patch the barrel with copper remover (Shooter's Choice or Sweet's) and wait 10 min.
5. After 10 min. (no more than 10 min!) run a wet patch of regular bore cleaner down barrel
6. Dry-patch barrel and patches should show blue indicating copper is being removed (when satisfied make sure to Gun Scrub clean ALL components to remove excess bore cleaners and Copper removers!)
7. Shoot one more jet of Gun scrubber down barrel (this removes any bore cleaner residue)
8. Oil barrel OR condition barrel with JB Bore Compound (I prefer the latter because it will remove any remaining fouling) without obstructing the barrel.

Caution: Copper remover is very potent and can damage finishes and attack metal (the good metal-not just the copper or brass!) when used incorrectly!

Caution: JB Bore compound is supposed to be left in the gun barrel but must be worked in completely! No obstructions. The compund will fill in the very pores of the steel and reduce fouling and improve accuracy the next time you go out. No extra oil is required for rust prevention purposes.

I have been using this method on handguns and some rifles over the years and veterans might find it wasteful (overkill) but I can get barrels almost as clean as cleaning done by the reverse plating method (electronic bore cleaning). Use just the right amounts and you will not run through bottles/cans quickly. This method does not rely on the bronze phosphor brush too much so you don't wear those things out too quickly.
