Why is it sometimes hard to change gear in my car?

Hi I have an old h reg nissan micra ls 1litre k10 model, when pressing the clutch down and trying to change gears its a struggle, particulary with 1st and 2nd, I am findin that I have to press down much harder to change gears easier. I had a new clutch fitted about 10 months ago. when the car is not running gear change is easy as pie. It has a clutch cable cos I had a look under the dash. I have been advised that its probably the clutch cable that either needs tightnening or replacing, how much should this typically cost?

Try to tension the clutch cable. You should easily be able to do this yourself because it is usually a scre-type adjustment bolt on the cable itslef where it connects to the clutch lever.
