My daughter wants an out-of-State wedding, what's the solution?
My daughter is making preliminary wedding plans (the wedding is still a few years away).
Out of the blue she decides that she wants to have a wedding in Maine (a favorite summer vacation spot). This is not set in stone at this point.
We live in New Jersey, the groom's family lives in New York and Connecticut. We assumed the wedding would probably be in New York, which is a central location.
I have a big problem with Maine, as it is about an 8-9 hour drive from New Jersey. She also has elderly grandparents that are not going to make that long drive.
The wedding will probably be a shared cost deal. The sky is not the limit on the wedding. We will all be as frugal as possible, but a Maine wedding will also add hotel costs to everyone involved as well the guests.
How do we handle this without having a big fight?
The grandparents are a big factor here. They would all be heart broken if they couldn't attend the wedding. They are elderly and there are health issues.
You say "no."
While you should charitably and kindly consider your daughter's wishes in this matter, you do not allow her to be a dictator. She may say "I hate tulips and don't want any" but she may not say "I want a hot air balloon wedding or I'm going to hold my breath" like a spoiled child.
The honeymoon is the time for personal self expression and wallowing in self indulgence. The wedding is about creating a festive occasion for your family.
