Off Red Dust
Can anyone tell me how to clean the lenses of my projection tv?
i have a 52 inch projection and have taken the front screen off and cleaned both pieces. i have cleaned the mirror and top of the lenses. when i looked inside the lenses it looks to me like there is tons of dust under neath that i can see through the blue green and red cans. is there a way of getting that dust out? my picture has improved since cleaning the dust out of the inside, but i still have a bright halo effect around all images and i read that the lenses being dirty may be causing this. any help would be appreciated.
Your problem is not due to anything that can be cleaned. The "cans" as you call them are called CRTs. Between the face of each CRT and the lens assembly, it is sealed and filled with a ethyl glycol based liquid coolant. Normally this coolant is clear, but after time, the liquid can become clouded, especially the red for some reason. On some models this coolant can be replaced, some are factory sealed though and the entire CRT assembly must get replaced.
The halo effect that you're seeing could also be caused by one or more CRTs becoming weaker, due to use. The CRT operates by cathode emmision; when the cathode ages, it is emmisions get weaker, and you will see that halo. Sometimes it will appear as color streaking. Again, nothing can be done except replacement of the CRT.
